Born in 1958 in Medina, Saudi Arabia, Jamal Khashoggi was a Saudi Arabian dissident and well-known journalist for The Washington Post. He was killed at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on 2 October 2018 by agents of the Saudi government.
Several countries, of which Turkey, believe Jamal Khashoggi’s murder was premeditated murder, and Saudi officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have admitted that agents of the Saudi government killed him.
1. Who was Jamal Khashoggi?
From ally to dissident
- Initially close to Saudi rulers and of Mohammed bin Salman (“MBS”) in particular in whom he saw a reformer, Jamal Khashoggi became a dissident shortly after MBS became Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. Jamal Khashoggi fled Saudi Arabia in September 2017, and starting writing negative articles in the press about the Saudi regime. He was deeply critical of Mohammed bin Salman, and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and strongly opposed the intervention of Saudi Arabia in Yemen.
2. The murder of Jamal Khashoggi
- Khashoggi entered Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Turkey on October 2, 2018 in oder to obtain a document necessary for his marriage, scheduled for the next day, with his fiancée Turkish journalist Hatice Cengiz whom he met shortly before. After initially denying his death, claiming that Khashoggi had left the consulate alive, Saudi Arabia eventually acknowledged that Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate, but successively gave several contradictory versions of the circumstances of his death, before eventually admitting that his murder was premeditated.
3. Reactions following the murder
The sharpness of the reactions of most Western countries has been mitigated, due to the eagerness of those countries to preserve their economic and military relations with Saudi Arabia.
