More than 37,000 workers who were recruited by contractors in the preparation of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were asked to pay illegal recruitment fees.

Organizers of the 2022 World Cup have announced that 160 contractors engaged in building the core infrastructure of the tournament have agreed to refund $25m in recruitment fees to more than 37,000 workers over the next three years.

This is one of the measures that has been adopted by Qatar following global scrutiny. Qatar has also introduced a $200/month minimum wage and the partial abolition of the exit visas.
