Iran has shot down a US spy drone over the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that a war could erupt between Iran and the US. The news was reported by state media.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) affirms that the drone had violated Iranian airspace, which the US military denies.

We did not have any aircraft in Iranian airspace today,” said Captain William Urban, spokesman for US Central Command.

This new episode comes at a time of escalating tension between the US and Iran. This week, the US deployed an additional 1,000 troops to the region in order to respond to “hostile behaviour” by Iran. The US also accuses Iran of being behind the attacks on oil tankers, accusations which Iran denies.

Russia and China have warned the US of trying to provoke a war in Iran.
