The historic event in Senegal brings together young athletes from around the world for two weeks of competition
The 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games have opened in Senegal, marking the first Olympic event ever held on African soil. The inaugural ceremony took place on Saturday at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, near the capital Dakar.
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Games open on October 31. The event was also attended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry and Dakar 2026 organizing committee chief Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye.
The ceremony featured traditional African dances, music, light shows, and performances celebrating Senegalese culture. More than 1,100 performers took part, including hundreds of dancers, according to the IOC. The program also included a parade of participating delegations.
Faye praised the ceremony in a post on X on Sunday, highlighting the country’s cultural heritage and thanking the organizers. Authentic Senegal! What a people! What a culture! Tonight, we showed the world the beauty of what we are, he wrote.

Russia was represented by 13 athletes carrying the national flag during the opening ceremony, the Russian Olympic Committee reported. Russian competitors are participating under their national symbols at an IOC event for the first time since 2020. The athletes previously faced restrictions imposed after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
The Games run from October 31 to November 13, with around 2,700 athletes representing 204 national Olympic committees and a refugee team. The event was originally scheduled for 2022 but was postponed for four years following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Several African countries are now set to host major sporting events, including Formula 1 racing in Rwanda in the early 2030s, the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Kenya, and the 2030 FIFA World Cup in Morocco, alongside Spain and Portugal.
